Ancient History of Pearls

Whoever first opened the oyster and revealed the lustrous pearl it was worth opening and revealing the great secret. It was most likely that it happened thousands years ago. These beautiful gems are the only gemstone which does not need cutting and even polishing.

The history of pearls dates back to ancient times of civilization. In Hindu mythology, in the ancient time Lord Krishna was credited for finding out the pearl and presenting it to his daughter on her wedding day. Similarly in the ancient China pearls used to be loved and value of pearl was understood ever since that time as we can find the description of pearls in the Shu king written in 2300B.C.

In Egyptian history, the mother of pearl was used as decoration far back as 4000 B.C. Historians believe that the actual use of pearls came in existence, perhaps as late as 5 B.C. when Persia conquered Egypt.

In the ancient Roman history, pearl was used for decoration and other jewellery purposes. Roman ladies preferred the gowns with pearls sewn on it and they also made sofas with pearl decoration. Pearl is also described in holy books like the Koran and the Bible.

The history shows that pearls were basically found in oyster beds in the Persian Gulf. The coasts of India, Japan, Sri Lanka and the Red Sea also featured pearl depository. Almost every pearl came from the sources above until Europeans started to find out new sites of pearl.

Pearl has been as a part of jewelry world since those ancient times and continues to be so. Who doesn’t love the pearl jewelry; the beautiful gem really fascinates all.
